Plumber in Edmonton: 3 Reasons the Shower is Leaking

Reasons the shower is leaking

A leaking shower can be a big problem. Ironically, most shower leaks are pretty easy to resolve, but the leak itself can cause even more damage the longer it goes on. When you see signs of a leak in your bathroom, contact a plumber in Edmonton to find the source and get it fixed.

Signs Your Shower Is Leaking

Here’s what to watch for to spot signs of a shower leak. Unfortunately, the same signs of a shower leak could be related to other types of water damage. A professional plumber can help you get to the root of the problem to get it fixed before it causes even more damage.

  • You are seeing mould or mildew in the bathroom, or you may smell mustiness.
  • The paint is peeling off your bathroom wall.
  • You may see spots on the ceiling below the bathroom if you have a 2-story home.
  • The tile or grout in your bathtub may have issues.
  • You may even see water on the bathroom floor when no one has taken a bath.

Why Is Your Shower Leaking?

There’s a whole host of reasons you may have a leak in the bathroom. Water doesn’t always take a linear path, so tracing it back to the source can be difficult. That’s why we recommend hiring a plumber to solve the problem and to find any damage that needs repair. Here are some of the more common reasons a shower might leak.

Shower Head

The showerhead can leak even when the handle is in the off position when the showerhead is covered with mineral deposits. The lime clogs the holes, which causes it to drip after the handle is turned off. Take the showerhead off the fixture and soak it in vinegar for a few hours. Replace it and see if the problem is better. You may actually need to buy a new showerhead. Another common reason for showerhead leaks is a worn O-ring or gasket. You may need to replace the cartridge for a better seal.

Mixer Valve

The mixer valve controls the temperature of the water that comes out of the hot water tank before it reaches the faucet. The mixing valve itself can fail, which you might notice if the water seems to be colder when it comes out of the faucet, but this piece can also leak. Just like with the faucets, the washers and O-rings can become worn out and cause the seal to leak water. This is often a job for a professional who has the tools and experience to make the repair.

Grout Issues

You may notice gaps or chips in the grout when you have a leak. This could be the result of a leak, or it could be the cause of a leak. Water can seep between the gaps or chips and create more issues behind the wall. You may need an experienced plumber who can make sure that there are no water leaks causing the grout issues, then you’ll want to replace the grout to seal up the shower.
