4 Tips to Squeeze Extra Storage Out of a Small Closet

Do you have one of those closets that needs a hazard sign warning people against opening it and being bombarded by its contents? If you’re not careful, just such a situation can quickly arise if you have a small closet! While cleaning out the closet and getting rid of things that are no longer wanted or needed can help, some homeowners have to accept the fact that they have a small amount of space to work with. But never fear: there are ways to combat this problem that don’t require interior carpentry work or installing closet shelves. Here are a few clever ideas to start out with if you have a tiny closet:

  • Use under-shelf baskets to increase shelf space. If shelf space is at a premium in your closet, add a few under-shelf baskets to give yourself a little more wiggle room. These open-fronted baskets slide easily over your existing shelves, and are a great place to store shirts, underclothes or small accessories.
  • Become hook happy. While empty wall space may be hard to come by in a small closet, if you do have some space that isn’t being used, go ahead and add a hook or two (or a whole row). Hooks are very versatile, and can be used to hang jewelry, scarves, belts, coats and jackets, and a myriad of other things.
  • Utilize the closet door. If your closet is deep enough, one helpful tip is to hang items on the interior side of the closet door. Whether it’s a set of hooks on which you can hang some clothes or a closet door organizer with hooks, baskets and other handy features, the closet door is a potential storage area that shouldn’t be overlooked.
  • Give yourself more hanging space. A closet rod extender is simply a hanging bar that can be hooked over your existing hanger rod, giving you an extra rod on which to put your clothing. You can also suspend a closet organizer with shelves or even drawers from your clothes rod. These organizers are generally composed of polyester or canvas material over a cardboard frame, and work well for lighter items such as shirts and sweaters.
