Find yourself feeling like your home just never gets warm enough during the winter? You’re not alone. There are a few tricks to help keep your home warm during the cooler months. Our crew at Handyman Connection of Rockville has put together a few of those ways to help you do that. Check out some of our tips and tricks, and let us know which work best for you.
Ceiling Fan Settings
Change the setting on your ceiling fan to rotate counterclockwise, rather than it’s usual clockwise. You want to do this because heat naturally rises, and the counterclockwise spin will help push the heat back down rather than pulling it up faster that the original clockwise setting would do.
Close Off Unused Rooms
If you aren’t using a room regularly, keep its door closed. This will help retain the heat throughout the areas in your home that you are frequently using, and will help prevent cooler air from flowing throughout your home.
Steam From the Shower
Steam from your shower will help to keep your home warm as well. Leave the bathroom door opened when showering so that the hot steam can permeate throughout the areas near the bathroom, helping to reinforce the heat in your home.
Furniture Arrangements
Make sure that your furniture is not cluttered up in one area as that can resist the airflow from staying consistent. Also, if the vents are covered up by rugs or other items that will decrease the efficiency of your heating system and will allow for much less heat to come through your home.
Bathroom and Exhaust Fans
Turn off or use these fans sparingly as these types of fans pull heat that naturally rise out of the room and out of your home. These are also counterintuitive to the goal of the heating system, which will create a much less efficient use of your heating system.
Draft Stoppers
Install draft stoppers around the bottoms of any of your exterior doors, and in any windows that may be loose. There are also draft stoppers designed for your fireplace. This is a great tool to install if you aren’t planning to use your fireplace, as it helps to retain the heat in your home and will increase the heating system’s efficiency and usage.
Natural Light
Let as much natural light in as possible, as it’s a great way to bring heat into your home without having to crank up the heat. Open up the shades and shutters during the day. Sunspots will form in certain areas and will help to reinforce the heat in your home.
