What Counts as an Electrical Emergency?

Your home’s electrical system is a complex part of your home, so it’s bound to experience a few problems over the years. However, some issues are so important that they require immediate attention. Here’s a rundown on some of the biggest electrical emergencies that you should be aware of.

Outages

A power outage is usually caused by external factors such as a severed wire or your provider simply had to cut power in your area. Still, there’s a chance that a power outage is caused by something more serious such as a short circuit in your home’s wiring. If the power is out and you didn’t receive any heads-up from your local power provider, call an electrician ASAP.

Fire Hazards

There are plenty of things that can turn your home’s electrical components into fire hazards. Outlets could get overloaded and exposed wires could get short-circuited. If you smell something burning or suspect that part of the wiring is turning into a serious fire risk, you need to have it checked as soon as possible.

Electrical Shocks

Exposed electrical wires can send dangerous amounts of electricity running along metal surfaces in your home. This can easily result in serious injuries and they have to be fixed right away. In case of an electrical shock, make sure the injured person is well-away from the source of the electricity and turn off the main switches to prevent further harm to others.

Fallen Power Lines

Fallen power lines are the worst because they pose all three of the previous emergencies listed above. To make things worse, power lines carry even more electricity than what’s running in your home so the risks of serious injury or property damage are much higher. We strongly recommend staying away from any fallen power lines and contact the local fire department and local power distribution company ASAP.
