How To: Refresh an Old Deck

Ever feel like your deck needs a major upgrade? If your deck is starting to look a little run down or shabby, consider refreshing it instead of tearing it down and starting from scratch. A complete rebuild of a deck can get pricey if you want to do it right, but it doesn’t have to be that way. There are many instances where the crew at Handyman Connection of McKinney would recommend a rebuild, but when that’s not the case, check out some of these ways you can refresh your deck without spending a ton of money. These are small changes you can make without devoting too much time at once into your project.

Assess the Structure

Chances are the structural integrity of your deck is still in tact, which is a great first indicator that a complete rebuild might not be necessary. Have an inspector come out with you to make sure you don’t miss anything, as that could turn out not so pretty should you have rotting posts or rusted areas. Make sure to take time in assessing the entire structure.

Repair Imperfections

Take a really close look at any imperfections or damaged parts of the deck. This can include repairing broken, bent, or raised nails and screws to sanding down areas that might cause splinters.

It’s also recommended to incorporate an annual deck cleaning into your home maintenance schedule. If you’ve taken good care of your deck over the years and invest in a really good deep cleaning, that may even be all you need to revitalize the space. Use some really good deep cleaning solutions, a bristle brush, and in some cases a pressure washer to get the deck nice and clean again. You’ll also want to do this if you’re planning to re-stain your deck as well.

Refresh to a Unique/Modern Stain

Speaking of re-staining your deck, there are lots of stain “trends” that completely change the look and feel of your deck. One of the more popular ones is the concept of two-toned boarding. Aside from standard stains that can also look really nice, two-toned boarding is a modern, unique look. Get creative with patterns too as that is also an up and coming trend. Be sure to give us here at Handyman Connection of McKinney a call for any deck questions or if you’d like our help.

Re-Do and Refresh the Railings

Another hot trend in the deck world is upgrades to railings. Iron is a very popular material being used rather than the typical wooden beam look. Iron makes the deck look high class and contemporary.

Undertaking a complete deck renovation is a little more daunting than making small incremental improvements to your current deck. If you’re considering either, give Handyman Connection of McKinney a call, as we specialize in all things deck and home related. We are here to help talk you through your ideas and make your house a home.
