Home Safety Tips During the Holidays

Did you know that according to the FBI, nearly 400,000 homes are robbed during the months of November and December? That astounding number is a huge spike compared to the reported number of home burglaries during the rest of the year. That’s why law officials here in McKinney, as well as many other folks would encourage you to take extra safety precautions during the holidays when it comes to keeping your home safe. Our crew here at Handyman Connection of McKinney has put together a few suggestions and tips to help keep your holidays safe and happy.

Lock Up

As the holidays approach, take some time to do a very thorough check on each lock on all exterior entry points. That includes windows, doors, or any other spots that have locks. Make any replacements if necessary and ensure that all of your locks are working properly. Each time you leave your home, make sure to lock up completely and turn on your home alarm system. If you don’t have one already installed, we’d highly recommend considering the investment.

Heading Out of Town

If you’re planning a trip to see family for a long weekend, or if you’re heading out of town for longer, be sure to take a couple of preventative actions beforehand. Ask a trusted friend or neighbor to stop by your home each day to check up on things and to grab your newspaper from the front yard. Also, it’s recommended that you leave a TV or radio on. These two actions will helps to give the illusion that someone is home even while you’re away.

Displays in Front Windows

Also, our crew at Handyman Connection of McKinney recommends remembering to be aware of what’s visible through the windows of the front of your home. If many valuables or gifts are on display potential burglars could be enticed and encouraged to target your home.

Automated Lights

Consider setting all of your lights including holiday lights, exterior lights, and interior lights to automated timers. This will help from a convenience standpoint, help save on energy bills, and also will divert potential burglars from assuming you aren’t home. This is a really simple task to take an extra precautionary measure.

Tree

If you’re planning to have a tree in your home this holiday season, make sure it’s mounted very sturdily onto the base so that it doesn’t accidentally fall or get pulled on top of someone. Also we would recommend keeping it away from the fireplace as well if you have one. Ornaments or gifts can easily catch fire if you are not careful.

At Handyman Connection of McKinney, our goal is to help make your house a home, and also help you keep your home as safe as possible. Don’t forget to give us a call if you have any questions about other ways to keep your home safe and if you’d like to talk about your next home maintenance project.
