What to Know About Vinyl Siding

Why is vinyl siding so popular? Vinyl siding has long been a favorite among homeowners as it’s known for its durability and stylish flexibility. But, while most vinyl siding can last up to 60 years with good maintenance, there are a few common things that can cause damage which will shorten that lifespan significantly. Here are some of the most common causes of siding damage.

Excessive Temperatures: Hot or Cold

Vinyl expands and contracts with the temperature. While it can usually withstand normal seasonal changes in temperature, extreme swings can present a major problem for vinyl siding. Major heatwaves can actually cause it to melt, while frigid cold can cause it to crack. This process can also occur gradually over the years as your siding ages, so it’s important to inspect your siding regularly.

Hail or Windy Weather

Large chunks of hail or wind-propelled projectiles can cause major damage to anything during a thunderstorm. A large hail storm can result in unsightly gashes, cracks, and holes in your siding. Even worse, these openings can leave your home’s infrastructure vulnerable to bugs, moisture, and other elements. Watch to fix any punctures that occur immediately.

Water or High Humidity

Vinyl siding that is not properly sealed or installed can allow moisture in between the panels which can lead to warp. This can cause issues with any wood below the surface, especially near windows. If you’ve noticed water marks around the interior or exterior of your windows, make sure to call a professional and fix the damage.

Sunlight

Too much direct sunlight can cause warping, melting and fading of your home’s siding. While melting and warping are much more immediate issues to repair. Also, color can fade significantly within 10 to 15 years of installation, which can really affect the curb appeal as well as the value of your home.

Poor Installation and Previous Repairs

Finally, the most common cause of vinyl siding damage is poor installation. Vinyl is extremely reactive to temperature and moisture,  but only if the material is fitted and installed with the proper seals and backings required to protect it and your home for years to come.
