The first step to clean the gutters is inspecting the condition of your gutters. You will need a ladder and some tools to access the area where the gutters attach to the eaves of your home. Look for any missing or damaged parts of the gutter. Also, look at the joints between the sections of the gutter. These areas may be cracked or broken.
If you find any cracks or holes in the gutter, repair them immediately or contact a professional craftsperson. It’s best to use metal flashing tape to patch up small gaps. If there are large holes, it may be necessary to replace the entire section of gutter.
Once you have inspected the exterior of your gutter, remove the cover plate on the top of the gutter. Remove all debris from the bottom of the gutter by using a garden hose.
Next, inspect the interior of the gutter. Use a flashlight to see if there are any obstructions that could prevent water from flowing properly. Check the drainage pipes for blockages.
Once you’ve cleaned out the gutter, reattach the cover plate and secure it with screws. Make sure that the gutter is level before attaching it to the fascia board.
When you’re finished, check the gutter again. If there are any signs of leakage, repeat the process.
