Painting Tips and Tricks From the Pros

painting tips

These painting tips can help even amateur DIYers achieve professional-quality results!

  • To calculate how much paint you need, multiply the length of each surface by the height to get the square footage, then add up the totals. One gallon of paint will cover about 400 square feet.
  • If purchasing several gallons of the same paint color, pour them all into one large container and mix thoroughly, rather than using one gallon at a time. This keeps the paint color consistent from start to finish.
  • Protect doors and windows from paint speckles thrown off by paint rollers by covering them with plastic. When you tape around the door and window trim, leave at least a ½-inch overhang. Stick light plastic to the protruding tape. Slit the plastic over doors with a utility knife to allow access.
  • New paint will not hide dents and scratches. Take the time to fill them with spackle when prepping the surface. Gaps and holes more than 1/8-inch deep should be filled with heavy-duty, two-part wood filler.
  • The more textured your walls, the thicker the nap on your roller cover should be. A thicker nap can reach into crevices for more complete coverage.
  • Avoid dipping your brush too far into the paint. Dip it one-third of the way in to avoid wasting paint and pushing paint into the upper bristles, where it’s difficult to remove.
