Vancouver Home Renovations: What to Do With Appliances During a Remodel

What to do with appliances during remodel

A kitchen renovation can be stressful. Most people don’t have the luxury of living somewhere else for the six to eight weeks or more that it can take. Here are some tips for dealing with your appliances during your kitchen renovations and some ways to maintain your sanity until your home is back in order.

Find Room For a Makeshift Kitchen Area

If you’re planning on living in your home during your kitchen renovations, you’ll want to set up a place where you can have a microwave, refrigerator, coffeemaker and any other small appliances you use. When you’re packing up your kitchen, try to cut down on the items you think you want to leave out. It can be much easier to use disposable dishware during your renovations, especially when access to a sink is limited. Your contractor providing remodelling services in Vancouver may suggest places in your home that are convenient for appliances and convenient for them to move items to.

Your Oven

Whether your oven is gas or electric, you probably will have to give up the idea of using it during the renovations. If you have a gas oven, it will need to be disconnected by a professional. Fortunately, there are many small appliances that you can cook with, a microwave, an Instant Pot, an air fryer and an electric griddle. You may not have your dishwasher, so you want to consider that when you’re planning meals. Store the oven in a safe place. We recommend covering the front of the stove with a protective film to avoid scratches on the glass. If you have a glass-top stove, you may also need to protect the top of the stove.

A Refrigerator

Out of all your kitchen appliances, you’ll probably want to have access to the fridge unless you aren’t planning on living in your home. Your refrigerator can usually be moved into another room that has a level floor and outlet. The garage or dining room can temporarily house the fridge. Clean it out before you move it. If you leave your fridge in the home, get a protective board to put under it while it’s out of your kitchen. Make sure to unhook the ice maker and turn it off. If you do decide to store your fridge, use a protective film to protect the surface. Make sure it’s emptied out and defrosted before going into storage.

Your Dishwasher

It’s likely that the dishwasher will also need to come out of your kitchen. Have a professional unhook it from the water supply and drain it. You’ll want to let it air out and dry before you store it. Using protective film on the door protects it from getting scratched. You may want to place a desiccant in the dishwasher to prevent moisture from building up while it’s in storage.

Get Rid of All Your Appliances

If you’re already planning on buying all new appliances, maybe the solution is to sell or donate the old ones before the remodel to reduce the clutter in your home. You won’t have to worry about space, especially if the new ones are delivered before the remodel is completed. It’s one option to keep in mind.

Remember That Kitchen Renovations Are Worth The Inconvenience

Your kitchen renovations may be inconvenient for a few weeks. Remember your goals when you get frustrated. Plan simple meals or get takeout a few more times a week than you might normally. Keep your meals easy with little cleanup. When your renovations are complete, it will be worth it. Your kitchen will be more accessible, more stylish and more functional.
