Handyman in Vancouver: 3 Ways to Protect Your Deck From Water Damage

Protecting deck from water damage

Water damage can lead to an expensive deck repair in Vancouver. Homeowners need to know how to protect their deck so that it lasts as long as its potential. After you ensure that there is no water directly draining onto or pooling near your deck, you can choose the proper materials, stain them, and use sealants to keep water out, ensuring longevity.

1. Choose Your Materials Properly

Wood is popular because it is traditional, inexpensive, and attractive. It is also susceptible to mould, rot, and breakage. Wood absorbs rain more than other materials, which can make the deck soft and cause the whole structure to become weak.

Alternatives to wood include tile and stone. Even though they are still porous and not perfectly waterproof, they are significantly less likely to absorb rain the way that wood does. Outdoor tile is not the same as bathroom or kitchen tile. Slip-resistant deck tile is designed to withstand heavy patio furniture, outdoor foot traffic, and pets that may track mud and grass onto the deck. Stone is also weather-resistant, has good traction, and is easy to clean. The installation process is more complex, however, so be sure to call a handyman in Vancouver to get the job done right.

2. Stain the Deck

After you have chosen your materials, think about what colour you want the deck to be, and what chemicals you want to use. If you are installing wooden boards, make sure you pick a day with no rain in the forecast for at least 48 hours after your staining is done. Not only does the stain have to dry to the touch, but it also has to be fully absorbed into the wood to achieve maximum colouration and protection. Rain will cause you to start all over again.

Tile and stone also need chemical protectants. Deck tile will benefit from a coating of oil, to preserve its colour and keep out moisture. Use a four-inch paintbrush or paint roller to apply the oil evenly. For stone, use an acid stain that will easily seep into the material. Make sure the stone is clean and dry before you apply the stain.

3. Use Waterproofing Sealants

The most popular sealant for wood decks is polyurethane coating. Polyurethane creates a barrier against not only water, but also oil, dirt, chemicals, and animal droppings. It protects the colour you chose for your wood and creates a longer time before restaining. When water falls onto a wooden deck that has been fully cured with polyurethane, you will see the droplets of water bead up and slide off just like water off of a duck’s back. Tile and stone can be waterproofed as well. A latex-based protective sealer from your local retailer will keep out water, protect against the sun’s rays, and preserve the beauty of your deck.
