Regina Handyman: 4 Common Painting Mistakes Everyone Makes

Common painting mistakes

If you need interior painting Regina, your best option is to hire a professional to handle it. People who are not experienced with painting tend to make mistakes, which cost time and money to fix. Here are some examples of the mistakes that you could make if you attempt to paint the interior of your home yourself.

1. Not Cleaning and Preparing the Wall Properly

Even if you hire a professional to paint your home’s interior, the responsibility for cleaning the walls first often falls to you. Do not neglect this step. Interior paint can cover up a lot of flaws, but attempting to cover dirt, dust, grease, or cobwebs with paint could result in an uneven paint job or pigment that doesn’t adhere to the walls because of the underlying interference.

Paint doesn’t kill mould or mildew either. If you don’t deal with the fungal growth first, e.g., clean it with a fungicidal soap, it will come back to haunt you by growing through the new paint layer.

After the walls are clean, primer is applied to further prepare the walls. Professional painters usually handle this step for you.

2. Using a Low-Quality Paint

There are times when purchasing a generic brand can save you money, and the end result can be just as good. However, that is not the case when you are choosing paint for your home’s interior. Buying a cheap paint may save you money now, but chances are that you will have to repaint sooner and more often than you anticipate, which costs more in the long run.

There are many reputable brands available from which to choose. Some offer special features, such as washability, while others are guaranteed to last for a certain number of years. Determine what features you need, including the sheen, and then choose paint from a company that stands behind its products.

3. Overbrushing

Overbrushing involves applying too much paint to a brush or drawing the brush over the same area even as the paint starts to dry. It results in visible ridges left behind on the surface by the brush bristles. It is possible that you like the look of overbrushing and want to do it on purpose specifically to create that effect. However, most people find that it looks amateurish. If you want the surface to be nice and smooth, hire professional painters who know how to avoid overbrushing.

4. Not Using Painter’s Tape or Using It Incorrectly

Painter’s tape covers up and protects any structures that you don’t want to get paint on, including baseboards, trim, light switches, and other fixtures that you may not be able to remove from the wall or ceiling. It also allows you to create crisp, straight lines if you want a wall design that includes more than one colour.

Unfortunately, people who attempt do-it-yourself painting often use tape incorrectly. Not just any tape will do; painter’s tape is designed specifically for this purpose. Even so, it may not be effective unless it creates a tight seal along the edges.

Furthermore, when amateurs remove the tape, little patches of paint come off with it. There are two theories on how to avoid this. One is that you should remove the tape before the paint is completely dry; the other is that you should wait until the paint has dried completely and then use a putty knife to score the edge of the tape before pulling it off. Fortunately, professional painters know how to remove the tape correctly, without affecting the paint job.
