3 Reasons To Have a Storm Door Installed This Winter

Why you need a storm door

Everyone home has at least one outside door for each entry and exit. Some homes have two doors at each ingress or egress point: the main exterior door and a storm door. If you do not already have storm doors on your house, is it worthwhile to call a carpenter in Regina to have one installed?

The answer depends somewhat on your individual situation, but in many cases, there are advantages to installing a storm door. Here are some of the most significant storm door benefits.

1. More Effective Temperature Regulation and Ventilation

A screen door consists of one or more glass panels in a metal frame. Some also come with interchangeable screens. When you take out the glass panels and put in the screens instead, you can open the main door of the house while leaving the storm door closed. This allows air to circulate while keeping out bugs and other pests and is a good option if your home is uncomfortably warm or stuffy and you don’t want to turn on the air conditioning.

Some storm doors make it much easier to change between glass and screens. These doors have retractable screens. The screen is attached to the top of the glass panel so that when the panel is pulled down, the screen automatically takes its place. As the weather turns colder, you simply pull the glass panel back up, and the screen rolls back up out of the way. This helps to block cold air from getting past the glass panel, which can help to keep your home warmer.

2. Added Security

In approximately one-third of all home break-ins, the burglar doesn’t actually have to break anything to get inside. In these cases, the door is unlocked, so they merely turn the doorknob and walk right in. A storm door may not be sufficient to prevent a burglary, but it can act as a deterrent if it has its own lock, as many high-quality storm doors do. Burglars do not want to have to work hard to get indoors; they want to get in and get out as quickly and easily as possible. If burglars can’t open your storm door, it may be just enough of a deterrent to convince them that they should leave your house alone and move on to an easier target. If nothing else, it can slow them down long enough for you to call the authorities.

Just be sure that you carry a key to your storm door and have an extra copy hidden in a key safe. Otherwise, if you lose your keys or forget them inside, the storm door could prevent you from getting back into your own house. This is a frustrating but effective way to learn firsthand how your storm door can be used against burglars.

3. Increased Energy Savings

Many homes have older doors with gaps around them that allow air from inside the house to leak out. In the winter, this leads to heat loss, and in the summertime, conditioned air may leak out, preventing you from enjoying the full benefit of its coolness. In either case, your HVAC unit has to work much harder to maintain a consistent temperature. This means higher utility bills for you and, in many cases, unnecessary burning of fossil fuels.

A storm door provides an extra barrier. Any air that leaks out from around your front door gets trapped between the main door and the storm door. The storm door helps you to retain hot or cold air from the HVAC system and maintain a consistent interior temperature. As a result, your HVAC system doesn’t work as hard, meaning lower utility bills for you and fewer greenhouse emissions in the environment.
