Regina Plumbing Services: 3 Common Problems With Bathtubs

3 common problems with bathtubs

Plumbers in Regina see a lot of bathtub issues. It’s inevitable since residents use this feature so frequently. However, some problems are more common than others.

The good news is that you can prolong the life of your tub by being proactive. To keep your washroom like new, take a look at three of the most frequently reported tub issues and how to prevent them.

1. Mould and Mildew

Since the bathroom is no stranger to moisture, mould and mildew are top threats. These fungi require constant dampness to flourish, and they can cause a host of health problems:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Runny nose
  • Worsened allergies

Additionally, mould that starts in your tub won’t necessarily stay there. Fungi reproduce by releasing spores into the air, which means mould can hop from one surface to another. To keep mould from gaining a foothold, follow these tips:

  • Wash bath mats, shower curtains and liners regularly
  • Wash your towels at least every three days
  • Open the bathroom window to let out moist air
  • Use the bathroom fan
  • Install a shower caddy
  • Squeegee after showering

If you have mould, you should remediate it right away. Keep an eye out for the following signs so you can nip the problem in the bud:

  • Black or brown spots
  • Musty smell
  • Warping or peeling wallpaper

2. Clogged Drains

Unfortunately, water isn’t the only thing that goes down the drain. When you shower, hair, dead skin cells and soap scum all flow into your plumbing. Over time, that residue builds up and blocks the pipes. Eventually, you’ll find yourself standing in a puddle of dirty water.

However, that’s the least of your worries. If you don’t deal with a clogged drain immediately, it can compound into expensive issues:

  • Sewage backup
  • Flooding
  • Pipe corrosion

Keeping your drains clear is relatively easy. For example, if you notice slow drainage, you can use a clog remover to prevent buildup. If you want to avoid harsh chemicals, you can try flushing your pipes instead.

One of the cheapest yet most effective preventative methods is using a “hair catcher.” These small metal or plastic pieces have holes that are large enough to let water through but small enough to stop debris. Should some hair slip through, you can extract it with an unbent wire hanger.

Finally, if you have hard water, consider installing a water softener. Hard water contains minerals that build up inside your pipes; a water softener removes these to extend the life of your plumbing.

3. Leaks

A leaky faucet usually starts with a small drip, but that water usage adds up over time. Intense leaks can send your water bill skyrocketing, so fixing this issue early is essential.

Unfortunately, you can’t identify the cause of a leak at a glance; you need to hire a professional. Plumbers know the top origins of leaky fauces, allowing them to narrow down the list of suspects. For example, loose handles don’t shut off the water all the way and have to be replaced.

The problem may not even be the faucet. If there’s a broken pipe in your walls, it can cause a bathtub leak. Should this be the issue, you’re in for expensive repairs. Of course, the sooner you get them fixed, the lower the cost, as you won’t have to repair as much damage or worry about mould.
