If you felt a need to research storage solutions for your Christmas decorations, chances are you go big every year. While most of our team at Handyman Connection is of the mindset that you should go big or go home, we know that a lot of holiday décor necessitates a lot of storage. Though not a requirement, it would also help if you had a system of sorts to help you keep track of all your tinsel, trees and everything in between so that when it comes time to decorate again next year, you can locate and roll out everything with ease.
At Handyman Connection, we specialize in storage solutions for the home. To help you overcome your holiday décor conundrum, we’ve put together this list of easy yet clever ways to store your Christmas decorations.
If you’re tired of sifting through bins for your Christmas ornaments each year, store them in see-through tubs this year. As you take each down, carefully wrap them in newspaper or a soft cloth. Then, place them gently into clear totes. If the dozens of tiny, individually wrapped ornaments isn’t enough to tip you off to what’s in a bin, label each so that you’re not digging around for your ornaments next year.
Untangling Christmas lights is so frustrating that most people decide to throw used strands away and start anew the next year. While we understand the frustration, throwing used but still working lights away is wasteful. Fortunately, there is a quick and easy hack for packing away Christmas lights and prevent tangling. As you take strands down, wrap them around your hand to create a ball of lights. Once you get to the end of a strand, unplug it from the next, wrap the end around the ball, and secure it to itself. Store neatly with the ornaments or in a separate tote.
One of the best ways to store artificial trees is in their original boxes. The problem is, getting them back in without damaging the limbs is easier said than done — that is, unless you have old belts. To prevent branches from wrestling their way out of the box, smooth them down then secure them with old belts. Then, slide the tree into the box.
Wrapping paper is expensive, so when you have some leftover at the end of the season, you want to keep it for next year. The problem is, typical storage setups leave the rolls exposed to moisture, rodents and damage from nearby objects. You can protect your unused rolls by storing them in garment bags. Use a bag that slides under your bed or that hangs in your closet.
We don’t know about you, but we always feel a bit guilty about tossing out Christmas cards. Yet, it’s hard to find a use for them once the season is over. If you want nix the guilt without acquiring clutter, turn your Christmas cards into books. Each year, display a couple of years’ worth on the coffee table.
