How to Properly Clean Grout

Grout is rather difficult to clean because of its porous nature. On tile floors in your kitchen and bath space, grout is even more difficult to clean since crumbs, dirt, and debris can easily get into the grout itself. Handyman Connection of Mountain View discusses how you can properly clean grout like a pro.

Preparing the Grout

Before you dive in to clean the grout, you need to do some prep work. Start by spraying the surface with a 1:1 solution of vinegar and water. Spray the solution generously and let it sit for five minutes. Afterwards, scrub the grout with a grout brush, a scrub brush, or an old toothbrush. This removes the larger debris from the grout and prepares it for a more in-depth cleaning later on.

In-Depth Cleaning

Mix some baking soda with a bowl of water to create a paste. Then dip your brush or scrubber in the paste and work it on the grout. Make sure you apply the paste in the deeper parts of the grout, and take care to lay it on the small nooks and crannies of your tile. The vinegar you applied earlier will cause the paste to bubble up, and will eat out the soap scum that’s stuck to the grout.

Once you’re done, simply wash it with warm water. It’s important that you completely wash all the leftover paste away since these might end up accumulating in the grout itself.

How About Deeply Stained Grout?

Some grouts are too deeply stained to clean with vinegar and baking soda mix. If you don’t want to buy a grout cleaner, we suggest using hydrogen peroxide instead of vinegar. It’s tougher and can still get rid of deep stains and tough mildew and mold grout. Just like with the vinegar, let it sit for a few minutes then start scrubbing the grout.
