Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors Maintenance Checklist

When your units are installed (either battery or hard-wired) they come with manufacturers instructions. Follow these instructions to maintain the well working of your unit. If you do not these instructions, they can be obtained on the manufacture’s website.

Do monthly testing to ensure the units are working properly. Use the test button. This should of course make the alarm go off letting you know the sounder is working.

If your smoker detector is operated by batteries, you should know that some detectors come with a 10 year battery that is not replaceable. When this battery dies the unit must be replaced.

Every six months check batteries and replace batteries once per year. If your unit starts to chirp, warning the battery is low replace the battery it right away. In the case of the 10 year battery, replace the unit. Never just disable any unit.

When you are doing your six month battery test it’s a good idea to go over the family fire escape plan and make sure it still works as well.

While doing all the testing, make sure all family members know what is happening. Hearing an alarm is a very scary thing.

To keep the sensors working, keep them clear of dust. You can do this by vacuuming or blowing them out. And Never paint over smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Carbon monoxide detectors usually wear out in 5-7 years. Check the manufactures instructions to verify your unit expiry date if it not on your unit. If you have had the unit for 7 years replace it.

Smoke detectors usually last 10 years. Most detectors have an expiry date. If it’s 10 or older you need to replace the unit.
