Kelowna Home Repairs: How To Remodel And Get More Storage

How To Remodel And Get More Storage

People renovate their homes for myriad reasons. These may include updating old-fashioned styles, making room for a growing family, and accomodating a particular lifestyle. Whether storage tops your list of priorities or not, it is wise to incorporate as much storage space into your new floorplan as possible. Consider a few things you can do to ensure you use your space as efficiently as possible so you can minimize clutter and easily access the things you need.

Make a Plan

Before jumping into your home renovations in Kelowna, take some time to walk through each of your rooms and note the types of storage you need and where you need it most. For instance, are your books stacked on the floor beside an overflowing bookcase? Are your shovels, brooms, and mops leaning against a corner in your garage? Do you have a kitchen drawer stuffed full of various utensils? All these problems can easily be resolved during your remodel.

Introduce New Shelves, Cabinets, and Hooks

Shelves, cabinets, and hooks enable you to make the most of the vertical space in your house. Shelves work well for items that you want to be able to see, including books, glassware, and decorations. You can also add simple baskets to your shelves to organize and hide smaller, less visually appealing items. Consider adding built-in shelves to areas that are currently unused, such as above your TV, in the corner of your kitchen, and along the walls of your garage. Thin shelves placed along the sides of cabinets and kitchen islands are great for storing reading material, dishware, art, and other decorative items.

Cabinets are ideal for kitchenware, toiletries, and other supplies that you need to access quickly but don’t want guests to see. Custom cabinets and drawers can even help you hide printers, electric toothbrushes, and other gadgets if you install electrical outlets within the structures themselves. Remember that you can customize the precise size and shape of some cabinets to fit irregular items such as cookie sheets and brooms.

Hooks are a simple way to maximize wall space and even the space on the backs of doors. Hooks can be used to store garden supplies in your garage, skillets in your kitchen, or jackets and necklaces in your closet.

Utilize Helpful Hardware

Some gadgets, such as lazy Susans and pull-out drawers can help you make your cabinetry even more effective. In the kitchen, you could use lazy Susans to store everything from spices to plastic storage containers. Pull-out drawers are a great way to access heavy items, such as pots and mixers. Wood or metal rails can also come in handy on shelves as they prevent items like magazines and decorative plates from falling over.

Take Advantage of Hidden Spaces

Not all storage has to be obvious. In fact, stowing things out of sight is a good way to prevent your home from feeling cluttered. For example, you could create a mudroom in your main entryway, incorporating a hollow bench seat to hold everything from rain jackets to boots to gloves. Ottomans also offer a great deal of storage space for your family room while doubling as a useful seat or footrest.
