Fence Post Repair for a Weekend Upgrade

An attractive fence is an excellent addition to your home and property. Not only does it add value but it can also prevent pets and little ones from wandering off to shielding you and your family from prying eyes. While these are great benefits, the downfall of wooden fences are they need to be well-maintained. Since they are more vulnerable to moisture and insects, fence post repair will most likely be required. Handyman Connection of Kelowna is happy to share these tips for you.

Loose Posts – If your posts are still quite straight but not very sturdy, there is a possibility the wood is shrinking inside the concrete footing. This means you can temporarily reinforce the posts by placing shims around the bottom and secure with exterior silicone. If there is no concrete footing, a thinner post of the same width can be driven into the ground and then secured together. If you would prefer a more permanent solution, add a concrete footing which will solve the problem.

Post Replacement – Often more than not, posts rot underground therefore making replacement the only option. You will need to separate the fence from the posts, dig a hole on one side of the post to break the concrete up enough to lift the post out of the ground. You will then need to install the new post in the hole and pour the new footing. To try and prevent future rot, pour the footing so the concrete extends a few inches above ground and slope the edges for water to drain away from the wood. While this may not be the most aesthetically pleasing option, it will prevent you from future replacement.
