When it’s time to update your home, one of the simplest ways to give each room a new look is by changing your lighting. Rather than just buying new lamps and hanging lights to replace your existing illumination, consider installing recessed, or canned, fixtures instead for an easy, modern upgrade.
Before contacting an electrician in Kelowna to help you with electrical repair services and lighting upgrades, read up on some of the benefits of switching out existing fixtures for recessed lighting.
Unlike a pendant above a kitchen island or a table lamp placed next to a reading chair, recessed light fixtures can illuminate more than what’s directly below them. There are engineering principles behind the effect, but essentially the fixture placement, can size, and trim design of a lighting scheme combine to provide uniform illumination.
An experienced electrician will determine how to evenly distribute light throughout your space. When maximum brightness is the goal they may install reflector trim, which pushes additional light out of each fixture. For a subtler effect that still provides wide illumination, baffle trim may be used. Either way, more light will be cast around the room than with lamps or drop lights.
Areas with recessed lighting feel larger for a few reasons. First, because cans are installed flush against ceilings, they create open space in rooms with this type of lighting. The absence of floor, table, or hanging lamps reduces obstructions and provides uninterrupted views that make the room more expansive.
Secondly, because of the even illumination recessed lighting provides, corners aren’t hidden away in shadows. Each nook and cranny is illuminated evenly, making rooms feel less cramped and claustrophobic.
Additionally, a recessed lighting technique called wall washing may be employed to draw attention to a room’s vertical surfaces like walls and staircases. This creates a sense of the room stretching upward, making it look taller than it is.
If you’re a tall person, you’ve probably trained yourself to watch for hazards in houses like low door arches, open upper cabinets, and hanging light fixtures. By replacing your existing pendants and chandeliers with recessed lighting, you’ll be rid of that last concern, putting an end to ducking when you reach across the dining room table or stand at the sink doing dishes!
Recessed fixtures are also less dangerous to clean because they aren’t as prone to gathering dust as ornate pendants and chandeliers. Rather than climbing a ladder and balancing precariously to wipe down every surface, just stand safely on the ground and use an extended duster to brush away what’s accumulated on the recessed bulbs and cans.
Finally, if you’ve got rambunctious kids who play around the house, breakage is all but eliminated by switching to recessed lighting. No more lamps knocked off tables as your brood stampedes from room to room, no more tripping over cords, and no more errant projectiles smashing your shades! The worst that may happen is a broken bulb if a can gets hit by a flying object, which is a lot easier to deal with than a shattered chandelier.
A well-designed recessed lighting system provides even illumination, makes rooms feel bigger, and improves home safety. When you’re ready to flip the switch on your existing lighting, reach out to Handyman Connection to locate a trusted and experienced Kelowna electrician.
