Maintenance Tasks to Complete During Fall

Keeping your home in good condition can help prevent major damage and save you money on costly repairs in the long run. During fall, the weather becomes cooler, making it the best time to catch up on your home maintenance tasks. 

Today, we share a short list of maintenance tasks you can do in the fall season. 

Insulate the Water Heater

If your water heater is warm, wrap it in a fiberglass insulation blanket. This type of blanket will help prevent heat loss on the floor and save you energy and money. You can easily find fiberglass insulation blankets at your local home appliance or hardware store.

Protect Outdoor Faucets

Fall is the best time to protect your outdoor faucets from freezing weather in the colder months. Frozen faucets can result in a burst pipe indoors, which can be a costly and messy problem. To avoid these issues, remove any hoses to outdoor faucets. Then, shut off their water supply and drain the water. 

Test Your Fire Extinguisher

Make sure this is stored somewhere visible and accessible. Check the tamper seal and pull the pin. If either is broken or missing, that means you need to buy a new fire extinguisher. Then, look into the pressure gauge to ensure proper pressure. Afterward, using a damp cloth, remove any debris from the hose and nozzle. To ensure safety, this task should be done monthly.

Unclog Gutters

When your gutters are clogged, rainwater tends to flow down the gutters’ exterior walls. This can cause water damage to the siding and masonry and even allow water to pool against the foundation and potentially leak into your home. To avoid more serious issues, keep your gutters clear throughout the fall season.
