Spackle Walls Like a Pro in 5 Easy Steps

If your walls have small dings, dents or gouges, the easiest fix is to use spackle compound. It is a type of putty that is applied in a similar way as drywall and joint compound. Generally, spackle is commonly used to repair large, properly reinforced holes.

While spackling is best done by a professional, here are some tips to give you an idea of how to properly spackle walls.

1. Choose Your Compound

One option is a pre-mixed paste containing a vinyl binding agent that’s best for filling small holes in areas that are not prone to damage. Another option is a compound in powdered form that you need to dilute in water for proper consistency. It contains acrylic and covers holes as wide as ¾ inch.

2. Prepare Your Work Area

To enhance the putty’s sticking power, prepare the area you plan to spackle. Use a putty knife or fine-grit sandpaper to remove all debris in and around the hole. You want to make the surface as smooth as possible.

3. Apply the Compound

Dip the edge of the putty knife into the spackling compound and scoop out a little more than what you’ll need. At a slight angle, hold the putty-loaded knife a little above the damaged wall and apply it downward to the patch.

4. Remove Excess Putty

When the hole is covered, hold the knife at a 90-degree angle to scrape away excess compound. Be careful not to pull the putty from the hole. Use a damp cloth or sponge to wipe residual compounds from the wall.

5. Dry and Sand the Repaired Area

The compound should be dry after two hours. By this time, you can lightly sand the patched area using fine-grit sandpaper. Continue doing this until you achieve a smooth appearance. Use a cloth to wipe away any dust.
