6 Tools Every Homeowner Should Have

Keeping a basic set of tools, with some knowledge on how to use them, can help you save on time and resources for fixing home problems. In this blog, Handyman Connection® of Butler Warren shares a list of the tools every homeowner should have.

  1. Measuring Tool — A measuring tool is essential to home tasks. Unsure whether a piece of furniture would fit in a tight spot? Cutting a length of PVC pipe for some plumbing repair? Buying downspout extensions? You’ll need a precise measuring tool for all of these. Invest in large measuring tapes that can measure 25 feet or more. This can be useful when you need to measure long runs of material across a room.

  1. Screwdrivers and Hex Keys — You should have a screwdriver set in your toolbox, both Phillips and flat head, ideally in various sizes. Large screwdrivers are ideal for repairs that require a large amount of torque, and for loosening rusted screws. A set of precision screwdrivers are useful for fixing clocks and thermostats. It also helps to have a set of hex (hexagonal) keys, as many kinds of furniture are equipped with hex screws.

  1. Hammer — A toolbox wouldn’t be complete without a hammer in it. A claw hammer is best as a general-purpose hammer. You can buy other types later as you need them: a sledge hammer for demolition work, or a rubber mallet for surfaces that might get damaged from a metal-faced hammer.

  1. Wrench Set — If you have anything that has nuts and bolts at home, you need a good wrench set. While an adjustable spanner can do the job of several wrenches, a solid wrench exerts more force, which can be critical when you need to loosen a rusted bolt.

  1. Plier Set — There are several types of pliers designed for specific purposes. If need some things for your “starter kit,” start with a vice grip and needle-nose pliers.

  1. Utility Knife — Also known as a boxcutter, a utility knife is your all-around cutting tool. It helps to have a few spare replacement blades in your toolbox.

These are just some of the basic tools that will help you get a few home tasks done. Complex tasks will require professional help. Call Handyman Connection of Butler Warren at (513) 733-3777 or fill out our contact form to schedule an appointment.
