How to Get Your Home Ready for the Holidays: A Checklist

Winter begins in a matter of weeks, which means it’s time to get your home ready for the holidays. In preparation for the festive season, Handyman Connection® of Butler Warren shares a quick checklist to get you started.

Front Entry

Keep an eye out for ice and snow, and make sure the front walkways and porch are free of them. You will not want anyone slipping and sliding while trying to get to the front door. Test all outdoor lighting, and make sure they all work. If you have guests arriving at night, a nice illuminated entry can make a good first impression, decor or no holiday decor. Make sure the coat closet is clean, and has more than enough space for extra guests.

Living Room

Check the carpeting for stains and odors. Schedule professional carpet cleaners at least a week before your guests arrive. If you elect to clean it yourself, allow enough time for it to dry. Inspect the furniture for anything unsightly. Make sure the windows are clean, and if you haven’t done so, retouch the paint as needed.

Bathrooms

Your guests are bound to use the bathroom during their stay, so you will want to make sure it looks good. Broken tiles and old grout can be replaced over a weekend. Keep an eye out for mold and mildew, and clean them off if you seen them. Test the bathroom fan is working, and hire an electrician if it’s not. Stock up on guest bath towels, hand towels, and some extra toiletries like soap, shampoo and toothpaste.

Kitchen

You’re bound to be doing a lot of cooking over the holidays, so make sure your cooking appliances are working. Clear your kitchen island of items you won’t be using; you’ll need all the space you can get. If you don’t have them already, buy a few chafing dishes to keep the food warm. 

Bedrooms

Expect a few guests to stay the night, so make sure the guest bedrooms are aerated, the guest beds fitted with fresh linens, and the closets cleared. Test the room heating and make sure the thermostat is working properly.
