If the sound of slamming cabinet doors is more than just an annoyance, soft-close cabinetry is something that you should have on your next bathroom or kitchen remodeling checklist. In today’s post, Handyman Connection® of Mason shares the reasons why we love having soft-close cabinets in our homes.
If you only need one reason to get soft-close cabinets, it’s that they won’t slam closed on you. If you need two reasons, it’s that they can last longer than standard cabinets. Soft-close hinges use either a damper or hydraulic system to slow the door down as it closes. Since traditional hinges do not have this feature, they’re more likely to develop issues caused by stress on the frame and hardware.
Soft-close cabinets can bring you peace of mind. The noise of slamming cabinet doors can be bothersome, particularly in a busy household. More than the peace and quiet, soft-close cabinets can also help reduce the risk of someone’s fingers getting caught in the cabinet doors slamming shut. Protruding objects are also less likely to cause damage to the cabinet doors.
Cabinet hinges may not be readily visible, but they do contribute to a kitchen’s aesthetics — a cabinet door that closes with a gentle nudge instead of a forceful push exudes refinement and attention to detail. This subtle yet significant feature can enhance the overall feeling of quality and sophistication in your home.
If you are considering keeping your existing cabinets, you’ll be glad to know that most cabinets can be retrofitted with soft-close hinges. We say “most” because switching to soft-close hinges may require getting new cabinet doors. The cabinet boxes should be thick enough to allow the screws or fasteners to penetrate halfway. The cabinet doors may need to be refinished or repainted, as it would allow cleaner results as opposed to installing the hinges now and painting them later. If your existing cabinets are at least 10 years old, consider this an opportunity to address structural issues and repair damage to the cabinet boxes.
Whether you’re retrofitting existing cabinets or having new ones built, a skilled handyman can ensure proper installation. Give Handyman Connection of Mason a call at (513) 733-3777, or fill out our online form to request an estimate.
