As we nestle into the cold embrace of winter, it’s not just the chilly air we have to worry about — plumbing issues can happen when you least expect them. In today’s post, Handyman Connection® of Mason takes a look at some of these winter plumbing issues and how you can stay ahead of them.
Freezing temperatures pose a risk to the water mains and uninsulated pipes in the house. Water expands as it freezes, which means standing water in the pipes can exert enough pressure to make them burst. Fortunately, it is entirely preventable with proper insulation. Other strategies, such as installing heat cables and allowing a small trickle on one of your faucets also work. Make it a point to have everyone in your household know what to do in the event of a burst pipe. Let them know where to turn off the mains, and have the number of a trusted plumber saved on your phones.
The holiday season often sees a spike in kitchen activity, and with it, an increased risk of clogged drains. Be mindful of what you dispose of down the sink. Grease and fibrous food waste can solidify in cold pipes, leading to blockage and what’s known as “fatbergs”. Waste grease can be disposed of by collecting them in a sealable container like an empty coffee can and placing it in the regular household trash. Alternatively, try to find out if there are oil disposal or recycling services in your area.
Dropping temperatures mean you’ll be using more hot water. Make sure that your water heater is up to the task by having it inspected by a plumbing or heating professional. If you have a traditional tanked water heater, you’ll want to make sure the tank is flushed every once in a while to prevent sediment from blocking the flow of water. If it’s due for a replacement, consider getting a tankless water heater.
