5 Deck Design Ideas That Will Make Yours Stand Out

Whether it’s a sprawling space or a cozy corner, good design can make your deck the talk of the neighborhood. If you’re planning on building a new deck soon, read on as Handyman Connection® of Mason shares deck design ideas for your project.

  1. Create a multi-level deck. If your property happens to have uneven or sloped ground, a multi-level deck would be perfect on it. In addition to creating level spaces without excavation, it’s an opportunity to create spaces for different activities. One platform can be designed for entertaining guests, another for outdoor dining, another for lounging.
  2. Install integrated lighting. A well-planned lighting scheme can make it a great space for nighttime activities. There are various ways to approach deck lighting, from classic pavilion lights to custom recessed lighting. Low-voltage, energy-efficient LED lights can give you more latitude with your lighting design without worrying about the associated energy cost. Make sure to work with a local licensed electrician to ensure safety and code compliance.
  3. Incorporate built-in seating. New lawn chairs and recliners for your deck are great, but if you want to take your deck to the next level, incorporate built-in seating into your deck design. They’re functional, durable and can add aesthetic value like hardscaping does. If your yard happens to overlook a view, built-in benches can make it a dedicated viewing area. You can also have several seats arranged in a circle, surrounding a fire pit — it would be a great place to enjoy summer nights with friends and family without ever leaving home.
  4. Add a touch of nature with a green wall. A vertical garden or “green wall” can serve as a stunning focal point and as a barrier for privacy. Having greenery as part of your deck design has several benefits, from adding visual vibrancy to helping improve air quality in your yard.
  5. Have a dedicated outdoor kitchen. Backyard kitchens are not just for barbecue enthusiasts. If you entertain guests in some capacity, an outdoor kitchen is a must-have. It makes cooking and serving much easier, it can help reduce the foot traffic between the kitchen and the yard, and you won’t have to worry about setting off the smoke alarms.
