DIY home improvement projects can be very fulfilling, but they can easily spiral out of control and cost more than they should if you don’t plan your initial budget carefully. In fact, it’s not a stretch to say the success of your full home remodel rests solely on how you budget it.
In this post, Handyman Connection® of Mason lists four things to keep in mind when planning and budgeting a full home remodel.
1. Don’t Rush the Planning Stage
Although full remodels are exciting, it’s never a good idea to rush the planning stage just so you can start working. This is the integral part of the entire project and, more often than not, rushing will actually delay your project. It will also affect the quality of work you’ll do and can mean the difference between a mediocre and good-looking remodel.
2. Prioritize the Larger Remodels
A common mistake homeowners make is starting on the “smaller” and relatively easier to do projects. While it may seem correct on paper, what you actually want to prioritize are the larger structures that have the most impact on your home. You’ll want to, for example, repair the roof before you add another room, as the state of the roof can affect the energy efficiency and comfort of your new room.
3. Avoid Spur-of-the-Moment Changes
Sudden add-ons and changes to your original plan will derail your schedule, cause delays and quickly deplete your budget. You’ll want to stick to what you’ve already planned out. Resist the urge to do this just because it looks attractive; as we pointed out earlier, you’ll want to prioritize the projects that have the most impact on your home.
4. Secure the Necessary Materials
Finally, and before you attempt the project, you’ll want to make sure you have all the necessary tools and materials. The last thing you want is to get caught in the middle of the project only to find out you’re missing a certain tool or material to actually progress or finish the project. That’s why it pays to do your research during the planning stage of your project.
