How to Properly Check for Leaks on Your Property

Leaks are the most common household problem and they are far from harmless. While they start out small and insignificant, they will grow in size in a matter of weeks when left unattended, becoming more expensive to address. Spotting Roof Leaks

Roof leaks are more difficult to spot since they usually manifest under the roof where you normally can’t spot them. This doesn’t mean they are completely invisible, though; you can spot them by checking for the trail they leave behind. In your attic, check for spots of moisture damage on the wooden parts of the roof structure or pools of water nearby.

If you don’t have an attic, simply check the corners and floors. Most of the time, leaks appear at the side of the roof and they’ll travel extensively in this part of the house. Faded flooring is also a sign that there’s a leak nearby.

Spotting Plumbing Leaks

This is easier to do since you simply need to check your property’s water meter. First, make sure no one’s using water inside your house. Now, look for a small triangle or silver wheel in the meter. This is the leak indicator. If it’s moving, even when all sources of water are turned off, there’s a big chance there’s a leak in the plumbing.

Inside or Outside?

To determine if the leak is outside or inside, start by shutting off the water at the main shut-off valve. If the meter stops moving or there’s no change, the leak is located in the house. If the leak indicator continues to move or moves abruptly, then the leak is outside.
