How to Find Wall Studs Without a Stud Finder

Because plaster or drywall is too flimsy to actually support extra weight, finding the stud is an important first step if you want to hang a shelf or piece of artwork on the wall. Spotting the Signs

First, shine a flashlight at a steep angle against the wall. You’ll most likely see an area of the wall with strange bumps or dimples. These irregularities are caused by the nails securing the surface of the wall to the studs. If you see this “row” of bumps, chances are there’s a stud underneath them.

Check the Baseboard

The baseboard is nailed to the studs themselves and the outlets are usually attached to the side. The area around the electrical switch is also mounted on the sides of the studs. The area where you want to hang your new wall additions should be close to them.

Spotting the Next Stud

Once you’ve found the first wall stud, the next one isn’t too far off. Its “neighboring” wall stud is 16 or around 24 inches away from it. Simply look for the dimples and bumps near the first wall stud and you’ll be able to find the next one.

Nail Check

You can also drive a small nail into the wall to check for the wall stud. If the nail doesn’t hit wood under the plaster or drywall, then insert a wire hanger. Twist it and you’ll most likely hit the stud, which is usually just a few inches off from where you drove the small nail into.
