Troubleshooting Common Water Heater Problems

Do you need to troubleshoot a water heater problem? While some gas utility companies will fix problems with gas water heater’s supply, they won’t deal with other water heater problems. You need to call a professional like Handyman Connection of Butler Warren or fix it yourself.

Water Heater Problems

While we recommend calling us when dealing with a difficult water heater problem, you can the following tips for minor annoyances:

No Hot Water

The solution to this problem will depend on your kind of water heater. For a gas water heater, you need to check if it is turned on, see if the pilot light has gone out, and check if the water heater burner ignites. You can follow the instructions on the tank to reignite the pilot light and you can leave the water running and adjust the thermostat to spark the burner.

For electric water heaters, make sure that the appliance is receiving electricity, the high-temperature cutoff, or if there is any water inside the compartment. If the cutoff is bad and if there is water in the compartment then you need to call us for repairs.

Not Enough Hot Water

If there is not enough hot water for your home, then you may have an undersized water heater. If this is not the case, try adjusting the temperature dial. If this doesn’t work, check for leaks next. You can also flush the water heater tank to clear out mineral deposits.

A good way to resolve this is to check the dip tube. If it is broken or cracked, then cold water can mix with the hot water in your tank. Call us if you need a dip tube replacement or more help.

Hot Water is Too Hot

Turn down the thermostat dial; note the present setting then adjust it to a cooler temperature. Wait a few hours and see if this solves the problem. If this doesn’t work, then you need to check if your temperature-pressure relief valve is working; otherwise, replace it. Turn down the water heater’s temperature and wait a few hours. Then drain the water from the tank and replace the relief valve.
