Kelowna Handyman: Laundry Room Organizing Ideas

Laundry room organizing ideas

Does your laundry room work for you? If not, you can increase its efficiency with organizational renovations. Of course, you need a game plan before you contact professionals for help with storage solutions in Kelowna. Take a look at the following remodelling ideas to see what works for you.

Install Shelves

Shelving is a must in any laundry room, but smaller spaces may not allow for traditional designs. Instead, you need to get creative.

Floating shelves are an excellent option for laundry rooms because they don’t take up much space. Additionally, you can place them in nontraditional places, such as over doorways, allowing you to utilize vertical areas. Putting them above the washer and dryer is another option; this placement offers convenience since you have everything you need in one place. Finally, floating shelves let you see everything at a glance. If you’ve run out of detergent, you’ll know right away.

If you don’t mind “hidden” features, you can use another small-space trick: pullout shelves. Like drawers, these shelves slide into a wall or cabinet and sport a handle for easy access. When you pull them, you can access a smooth, flat surface, perfect for folding clothes or temporarily holding laundry baskets.

Speaking of baskets, you can further organize your shelves with wicker baskets. These affordable decor pieces look nice while grouping laundry supplies for ease of use.

Consider an Island

Kitchen islands are popular for the additional workspace they offer. Why not install an island in the laundry room for similar benefits?

You can use a laundry room island for various tasks:

  • Mending
  • Ironing
  • Folding

If you have enough space, you can even install a sink, a nifty feature if you frequently hand-wash clothes.

Islands have more to offer than surface area — they can also hold drawers, shelves and cabinets, making them the perfect place to store detergent, sewing supplies and extra towels. If you’re short, these lower storage options can be a lifesaver.

What if you have limited space? You may still benefit from a mobile island. These islands have wheels, allowing you to move them at will. That way, you can freely access different areas of the laundry room and still reap the benefits of extra counter space. As a bonus, you can wheel a mobile island into another room to fold clothes while watching TV.

Utilize Corner Space

Corners are often taken for granted, but they can offer organizational benefits when properly utilized. For example, you can find floating or hanging shelves specifically designed for corners.

Cabinets are another great choice, as they tuck laundry supplies out of sight for a neater appearance. Lazy Susans make cabinet contents even more accessible, especially if you have to crouch.

Finally, consider a corner sink. This small feature means you don’t have to go far to hand-wash. Additionally, having a designated hand-washing sink means you don’t have to worry about contaminating your clothes with bacteria that may linger in the kitchen or bathroom.

Hang Rods and Hooks

Some delicate clothing can’t go in the dryer and must be hung or laid flat. Hanging rods gives you a place to dry these items without taking over the entire laundry room.

If you need even more drying room, you can install wall-mounted dry racks. These fold down, allowing you to drape clothes over the rods, and fold nearly flush once you’re finished, conserving space.

You can also get pull-out drying racks that function similarly to pull-out drawers. Instead of smooth surfaces, they sport closely spaced rods to support lie-flat items or hang-to-dry garments.
