What Is The Difference Between A Carpenter, Woodworker, and Handyman?

What Is The Difference Between A Carpenter, Woodworker, and Handyman

Owning a home means performing maintenance and making repairs around the house. Over time, you may also want to make improvements. If you cannot perform these tasks yourself, you may have to hire a professional to help. Examples of professionals who may be able to help you include a handyman, woodworker, or carpenter in Kelowna. Some people use these terms interchangeably, and because the services they provide are sometimes similar, a degree of confusion is understandable. However, they are not identical, and the job you need to be done may require the expertise of one over the other. Fortunately, when you call Handyman Connection, you get in touch with professionals that can provide all these services and more.

Handyman

A handyman is someone who is familiar with basic maintenance and repair services in Kelowna. The services that a handyman provides tend to be general routine maintenance services, such as hanging pictures, replacing locks, hanging seasonal decorations and holiday lights, replacing caulking, and cleaning gutters. A handyman can also perform general repairs on a number of systems in your home. However, if you require a more detailed repair or a larger construction project, you might have to hire someone with more specialized training and experience in that particular area.

Carpenter

Carpenters are traditionally associated with wood as the primary material with which they work. While that is still true, carpenters also work with other building materials, including plastic. Generally speaking, carpenters tend to work on larger projects. For example, you might call a carpenter if you were adding a new room to your home, renovating an existing room, building a new patio or deck, or installing baseboards or moulding. You might also call a carpenter if you were constructing something from scratch on your property. Examples include a gazebo, playhouse, or shed. Jobs this big might be beyond the scope of a handyman.

Carpentry is a broad field, and different carpenters might specialize in certain areas. For example, a rough carpenter works on construction sites where concrete footings or foundations are being formed. Their job is to construct the wood forms into which the wet concrete will be poured. There are also home improvement carpenters who concentrate on small jobs. There may be more overlap between home improvement carpenters and handymen.

Woodworkers

While a carpenter is usually more involved in construction, a woodworker is involved more in production, e.g., shaping and prepping the wood so that it can be installed in homes. A woodworker is someone you would call if you wanted customized wood fixtures in your home, such as cabinets or stair railings. In this case, you would call a woodworker who could produce these according to your specifications.

A woodworker who maintains his or her own workshop may also install the new fixtures in addition to crafting them. However, most woodworkers today work in factories making mass-produced products. If that’s the case, you might have to purchase your own materials and hire a carpenter to install them. Even if you purchase custom items, the woodworker may not be interested in installing them, in which case you would have to hire both a woodworker and a carpenter.

Another scenario is that you hire a carpenter who helps you pick out the wood fixtures you want, orders them in the required quantities, and then installs them for you. This can end up saving you money because carpenters can save money on materials by buying in bulk and have the necessary knowledge to know exactly how much to buy so that there is no wasted extra.
