Pointers on How to Maintain Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

On Sunday November 1st Daylight Savings Time comes to an end for this year. This is a perfect time to have your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors inspected. Handyman Connection of Calgary urges all homeowners to ensure these devices are working properly.

If you do not currently have smoke or carbon monoxide detectors, call Handyman Connection of Calgary as soon as possible. We offer installation of both types of appliances, and can also add hard-wired smoke detectors to your home.

Pointers on How to Maintain Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

  • Monthly testing should be done using the test button to ensure the battery and sounder are operating properly.
  • In the packaging from the manufacturer, you will have instructions on how to maintain your alarm and keep it working well. These instructions can also be found on the on the manufacturer’s website.
  • If your smoke alarm is battery operated, you should check the batteries every six months. If your alarm is chirping, replace batteries ASAP as you never want to have a disabled alarm.
  • Some smoke alarms have a 10-year battery that can not be replaced, so when the chirping starts also check the manufacturer’s date. Older than 10 replace the unit.
  • When testing your alarms make sure your family is aware of what is going on. Hearing an alarm can be very scary!
  • This is also a good time to practice your fire escape plan with the family.
  • Make sure the unit sensors are clear of dust. Regularly vacuum or blow out dust that accumulates in the unit. Never apply paint to a smoke or carbon monoxide detector.
  • Carbon monoxide detectors usually wear out in 5-7 years. If there’s no expiration date on the unit or it’s more than seven years old, replace it now
