5 Home Renovations To Leave To The Pros

5 home renovation

People attempt do-it-yourself home renovations for many different reasons. Some are interested in challenging themselves by learning and applying a new skill set, and others are interested in saving money. While there is nothing wrong with either of these motivations, home renovations in Calgary may not be the best arena in which to set challenges for yourself. If you mess up, you may have to live with the consequences for a long time. Similarly, on paper, you may save money by attempting a home renovation yourself, but if you make a mistake, you may end up spending a lot more having it fixed.

Though there may be some relatively small home renovations you can handle on your own, there are some that you should always leave up to professionals.

1. Drywall Finishing

There’s a difference between drywall hanging and drywall finishing. The former is a job that you can handle on your own if you want to, with the help of an assistant, some drywall screws, and a cordless drill. Drywall finishing is a more complicated process that consists of several different steps. Mudding involves applying drywall compound to the seams between the panels. Once this dries, the next step is to sand it down. Do it incorrectly, and your walls could end up with unsightly bumps and ripples. Therefore, this is a job that you should leave up to the professionals.

2. Room Demolition

In most cases, a renovation project starts with demolishing existing internal structures. While this sounds like a fun and cathartic project to handle on your own in theory, there are a couple of good reasons why you should hand it over to the professionals. Some walls are load-bearing walls, meaning that they help to hold up the house. If you demolish walls indiscriminately, you could do serious damage to your home’s structural integrity by bringing down load-bearing walls. Another very good reason to hire a professional to handle demolition is that you can get debris hauling into the bargain. That way, you don’t have to figure out what to do with the remains of the destroyed wall.

3. Flooring Installation

DIY installation of some types of flooring, such as self-adhesive tile or plank, is easier than others. However, if you choose a large-format material for your flooring, such as wall-to-wall carpeting or vinyl flooring, the installation is much more difficult. Source your own flooring, by all means, but let a professional lay it out and cut it.

4. Water Heater Installation

The installation of a water heater poses two important safety hazards. It has to be hooked up to either an electrical connection or a natural gas line, either of which could be dangerous if not handled by someone who knows what he or she is doing. The other issue is that a water heater is difficult to move around because of its weight and bulk. Hiring a professional to handle this job protects you from injury in either case.

5. Painting Kitchen Cabinets

This is a job that seems simple on the surface but is a lot more complicated than it seems. The real work in painting kitchen cabinets comes in cleaning and sanding them first. In the kitchen, cabinets are exposed to a lot of grease and grime that are difficult to remove. Not only that, but you have to remove the cabinets to get the best results and then reinstall them. Painting cabinets is therefore a huge job better left to the professionals.
