Whether you’ve lived here for decades or you just moved recently, Calgary is a great city for retirees. Low house prices compared to the national average are just part of the draw. If you have already taken advantage of low housing costs in Calgary, you probably want to enjoy your home as long as you possibly can. Home repairs for seniors can help address many of the risks of aging in place and make it safer for you to stay in your own home.

What Are the Benefits of Retiring in Calgary?

Staying active in retirement is important, and Calgary makes it easy with great hiking and walking trails during the summer and access to skiing in the Rocky Mountains during the winter. If you’ve been having difficulty getting around, you’ll appreciate the ready access to public transportation. Two of the largest highways in North America run through Calgary, while the Calgary Airport provides another vital link, so it is easier for you to visit family from across Canada, across the border, or anywhere in the world. Calgary is one of the cleanest cities in the world, as well as one of the safest. It offers excellent access to health care, the fine arts, and annual cultural festivals. These factors and much more help make Calgary one of the five most livable cities in the world according to the 2019 Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Liveability Index, which ranked a total of 100 cities globally.

What Are the Benefits of Aging in Place?

There are multiple advantages to staying in your Calgary home as long as you can:

• Cost Savings: Assisted living in Canada costs between $1,500 to $6,000 per month. That can add up to $18,000 to $72,000 annually for the rest of your life.
• Health and Safety: A group living environment can put you at risk for infectious diseases spread between residents. These can be serious, especially if your immune system is already compromised.
• Familiar Setting: It can be comforting to stay in your own home where you have made family memories. Additionally, you can stick to your own established routine rather than adapting to someone else’s.

Most of all, aging in place helps you maintain your independence.

How Can Home Repairs for Seniors Help With Aging in Place?

In addition to repairs around your home, we can also perform updates for safety and accessibility. For example, the following updates can help reduce your risk of falls in various areas of the home:

• Stairlifts
• Anti-slip flooring
• Motion-activated lighting
• Walk-in tubs
• Grab bars

If you need to use a mobility aid, such as a wheelchair or walker, to get around, we can make your home more accommodating with updates such as:

• Door-widening or pocket doors
• Roll-out shelving
• Countertop height remodelling
• Zero-threshold showers
• Accessibility ramps (portable or fixed)

Painful arthritis in your hands can make it difficult to turn on traditional faucets. We can replace these motion-sensing faucets that turn on automatically when needed. Additionally, we can install anti-scald plumbing devices to protect you from hot water burns. Among the other services we offer to facilitate aging in place is the installation of cameras for security purposes or to allow caregivers to keep an eye on you.
