Critical Home Maintenance Tasks to Not Be Ignored

Being a homeowner means keeping up with lots of various responsibilities and tasks. Those tasks can add up fairly quickly, which means you need to prioritize them. Our crew at Handyman Connection of Rockville has put together our recommended critical home maintenance tasks that you should not ignore, and that you should prioritize when it comes to maintenance around your home. Check them out below.

Inspect for Leaks

Take time to do a full inspection around your home for any leaks, big or small, in any areas with water flow. Water damage can cause a significant amount of destruction to your home; therefore it’s critically important to stay on top of any potential leaks. Leaks can lead to mildew and rotting wood, which can lead to termites and even foundation damage if leaks persist unnoticed.

Take a look through your home and check for any dark spots or unusual appearances along the ceiling or floor. Be sure to check inside of cabinets as well. Also, don’t forget that each year you should check your roof for any shingles that may feel soggy or weak. If you find a leak quickly, that is the best-case scenario as you can easily fix it when it’s caught ahead of time. Don’t overlook anything that may even appear to be a leak, as if it continues can be detrimental and a much bigger project to take on.

Maintain Floors

Another task that is often overlooked is maintaining and keeping up with the maintenance of your floors. Carpeting can wear and tear over time, so replacing it as necessary is always encouraged, especially if it’s in a high traffic area with lots of accidents. Make sure that you are cleaning up spills as quickly as possible so that they don’t seep into the base of the floor. Hardwoods require refinishing every so often as well. This is recommended because the finish can also diminish overtime, which means that your hardwood can become easily scratched or damaged.

Inspect the Foundation

While this doesn’t need to be completed as frequently, it is still very important and should be completed annually. Walk around the perimeter of your home and make sure that the soil and dirt slopes away from the foundation walls. If it starts to turn inward, you’ll need to contact professionals to ensure the foundation is acceptable and that work doesn’t need to be completed. This can be a major, major project if not caught early on, which is why inspecting the foundation at the minimum of each year is so important.

While there are many other critical home maintenance tasks that should be completed each year those are some of the most important and cost saving in the long run. For other tasks and jobs that should be completed or if you need professional assistance in completing them, give our crew at Handyman Connection of Rockville a call. Our experts are standing by to help you with your next project, regardless of how big or small the task may be.
