How to Clean the Oven With Vinegar and Baking Soda

Cleaning the oven is a simple but slightly time-consuming task. The oven is dirtier than it appears to be, and it’s tricky getting all the food muck and grime out of it. Fortunately, you can clean the oven without resorting to harsh chemicals or heavy-duty cleaners.

Things You Need

Apart from the aforementioned baking soda and vinegar, you need a few things to clean the oven. These are:

• Dish gloves, dish soap, and a spray bottle

• A sponge or a cleaning cloth

• Scraper and paper towels

• A bucket or large bowl

• Vacuum cleaner (optional)

The First Steps

Start by removing the oven racks and wash them with warm, soapy water. Not all racks are dishwasher-safe, so consult the oven manual to avoid damaging them in the process. Set them aside after you clean them.

Now, remove loose food particles from your oven. Do this by scrubbing it with your sponge or scrapper. Next, make a paste using three parts baking soda and one part water. Spread this paste around the inside of your oven. Add some extra baking soda where there are burn spots and accumulated grime. Once that’s done, let the oven sit overnight.

Cleaning the Oven

Once you get back to your oven the next day, you’ll find that the paste has done half the work for you by loosening the dirt, grime and food particles. To clean the oven, moisten your sponge or cleaning cloth with warm water and wipe away the paste. Have your handy bucket or bowl of warm water to rinse the sponge.

For stubborn dirt and debris, use a scraper or spatula. You don’t need to exert too much effort as the paste would have loosened it and should just need a bit of a nudge.

Next, fill your spray bottle with one part each vinegar and water. Spray down the oven with this solution and wipe away any leftover baking soda paste with your cleaning cloth or a paper towel. You can speed up this process by using a handheld vacuum to remove the clumps of baking soda. Afterward, all you need to do is reinstall the oven racks and you’re done.
