4 Maintenance Must-Do’s Before Winter Arrives

With winter just a few months away, it’s important that the maintenance projects you’ll be doing at the tail-end of fall should revolve around preventive repair and maintenance. In this post, Handyman Connection® of Rockville lists four maintenance must-do’s you should accomplish before winter arrives.

1.    Clean the Attic Ventilation

Poor attic ventilation is one of the leading causes of ice dams and is something you don’t want happening during the middle of winter. Icicles may give your home a distinct look, but they can damage the roof and its wooden structures on top of increasing your cooling costs.

Before winter starts, make it a point to clean the attic vents. You can use a leaf blower or compressed air to get rid of the debris and dust build-up. Avoid using a pressure washer; while it can clean the vents, you don’t want to do it during a season when the leftover moisture can freeze over.

2.    Disconnect Garden Hoses

It’s easy to forget about the garden house as admittedly, Old Man Winter won’t actually damage the hose itself. That said, when water gets trapped inside the spigot and freezes, it can actually bust open the spigot. Worse, the trapped and built-up ice can damage the pipe. Even frost-proof spigots aren’t immune to this, so disconnect the garden hoses to prevent major water damage.

3.    Check the Heating System

Your heating system is going to work overtime during winter so you want to have it inspected before you start using it. The last thing you want to happen is for your heater to fail unexpectedly during the coldest weeks of the season. We recommend having a professional inspect it so you can rest assured your heater will not fail when you need it the most.

4.    Check the Attic Insulation

Like the heating system, attic insulation keeps your home as warm as possible during the winter season and protects your property from air leakage. You’ll want to check and replace old and waterlogged insulation as it can drive your energy usage up during the coming season.
