How to Properly Repair Drywall Damage & Stains

Stains may appear on drywall for many reasons including water, mold, or other substances.  Stains on drywall are unsightly but they should not necessarily just be painted over and covered up.  In fact, a stain on your drywall may indicate a larger problem that is unseen within the walls.  If left unattended and unfixed, the problem could grow and could lead to major, expensive damage.  Stains on your drywall are often the result of water damage from a leaky roof or plumbing fixture. It is important that you hire a handyman or contractor to help you fix the wall and rid your drywall of stains and damage.

Obviously, one of the most important parts of cleaning and repairing stains on drywall is treating and removing any potential or obvious mold.  If the stains are the result of water, there is a high chance that mold could develop and if mold is left unattended it will only spread.  An experienced handyman or contractor will be able to determine if there is mold and what the best course of action is before completing the repair on your drywall stains.

Once drywall has experienced damage it may begin to sag or break apart, depending on the severity of the damage.  If the damage is determined to be not severe, your handyman will simply need to replace the damaged drywall.  If the damaged drywall does not even need to be replaced, old damaged paint may need to be removed completely before repainting can occur.  A handyman or contractor will also have the specialized tools necessary to properly repair drywall so that it blends with the surrounding drywall for a more professional, seamless finish.  Most homeowners do not have the tools or knowledge necessary to achieve the kind of look that they want on their drywall and when they DIY the job what they are frequently left with  is a very obvious patch or repair job that is just a different kind of eyesore.  There are many different types of drywall finish and each finish employs a different technique to achieve its unique look.  Additionally, during the repair the contractor may determine that it would be a good idea to brush on a stain-blocking primer before painting again.  Once the drywall has been properly patched or repaired as well as primed, it is time to finish the job with a fresh coat of paint.
