How Long Will Your Home Remodel Take?

Some remodel for comfort.  Others remodel for aesthetic appeal.  And, some remodel to make their home more appealing for sale.

Some remodel for comfort.  Others remodel for aesthetic appeal.  And, some remodel to make their home more appealing for sale.  Whatever the reason, many homes can benefit from a small or large remodel that will add appeal and value to their home.  When anticipating a remodel, many homeowners carefully considers their budget and work hard to make sure they stay within their budget but what many cannot anticipate or forget to anticipate altogether is how long their remodel will take.  While there are many remodeling projects that do not necessitate temporarily moving out of the home, there are many projects that do.  And, even if the homeowner is going to stay in the home during the remodel, remodel projects often create dust and unpleasant living environments that people do not want to live in for very long.  Further, many contractors predict remodel lengths but the prediction is inaccurate or based on somewhat lofty goals.  But, anyone who has ever worked in construction or gone through a remodel knows that construction projects often take longer than anticipated.    It is this reason that we try to provide our customers with an accurate prediction of remodel length so that they can appropriately plan ahead and know what to anticipate.  Bear in mind that these estimations depend heavily on the size of the space and extent of the remodel within the space.

1. Kitchen

  • Partial

Refinishing cabinetry, replacing door fronts, changing out hardware, replacing plumbing fixtures, replacing the sink or other smaller renovations are considered a partial kitchen remodel.  These types of projects tend to take between 1-2 weeks and will moderately disrupt everyday life depending on the specifics of remodel and whether or not you are able to continue cooking in your kitchen during the process.

  • Complete

A complete kitchen remodel including completely replacing cabinetry, countertops, appliances, flooring, lighting and plumbing fixtures and more.  A complete kitchen remodel will significantly impact your everyday life because, for at least a period of time, you will not be able to cook in your kitchen or store items in your kitchen.  A complete kitchen remodel often takes between 8-14 weeks.

2. Bathroom

Aside from kitchen remodels, bathroom remodels are often some of the largest remodel projects to take on.  Bathroom remodels tend to take slightly less time than kitchen remodels, but still tend to take a good deal of time.  If you are simply replacing one element of your bathroom, such as a shower, it will take less time.  But, if you are undertaking a complete remodel and replacing cabinetry, flooring, hardware, plumbing fixtures, bathtubs and showers, etc. – it will take longer.  A typical full bathroom remodel takes, on average, 6-12 weeks.

3. Room Addition

Homes can often benefit from having another room, especially if a family is expanding.  A simple room addition, with or without a closer, often takes 4-6 weeks, depending on the home’s layout.

4. Replace Flooring

If your flooring is looking a bit outdated there are many new options in home flooring at any price point.  Replacing flooring dramatically updates a home and, depending on the type of existing flooring, as well as the type of flooring you are installing, it typically takes about 1-2 weeks total.
