Renovate The Space Under Your Stairs to Maximize Storage

If you are like millions of other homeowners, you are probably looking to maximize storage and functionality within your home.

If you are like millions of other homeowners, you are probably looking to maximize storage and functionality within your home.  One of the most underrated areas of a two-story home is the dead space under the staircase.  Fortunately, that space under the stairs can easily be renovated to enhance storage in an aesthetically pleasing way that you will love.  Not only will adding under-staircase storage be convenient but it is also a budget-friendly renovation – capable of being scaled up or down depending on how much you want to spend.

The first option when enhancing storage and renovating the space underneath your staircase is a closet.  This is one of the more budget-friendly options because it is simply converting the unused space into a closet or room with a door.  It can simply have a rod for hanging things or be an open space to stack things or you can enhance its functionality by adding shelving or an organizational system and lighting.  If you want to add something that is both beautiful and functional you could have open shelving installed.  Open shelving can have baskets for organizing small items or be a place to store books or other decor. Configuration possibilities are endless so work with your contractor to determine how many shelves are best and how to best install them to maximize space and seamlessly coordinate with your existing home decor.  Next, you could have drawers installed.  This is not always the first option that pops into your mind when you think of under-stair storage but it can actually be a very efficient form of storage.  They will have a good amount of size and depth and once you put things inside they disappear quickly with a simple push for fast and easy organization.  If you want more than drawers you have a combination of drawers and cabinets, or just cabinets installed, for beautiful custom organization.  This stylish addition will add value and storage to an unused space and look beautiful doing so.

All of these storage options can be configured to maximize storage or provide a combination of both storage and design appeal depending on your specific needs.  Additionally, if you want storage as well as additional usability, consider adding a bench with shelves for a book reading nook or a small desk or counter and chair for a small workspace.   For such an underrated and underused space, the possibilities are astonishingly endless.  Talk to your contractor or handyman about the best way to fully utilize the space and begin your renovation that will add value, function and beauty to your home.
