Signs It Is Time To Replace Your Cabinetry

With an abundance of DIY refinishing options circulating the internet, as well as many different re-facing options, it can be difficult to determine when it is time to simply replace your cabinetry.

With an abundance of DIY refinishing options circulating the internet, as well as many different re-facing options, it can be difficult to determine when it is time to simply replace your cabinetry.  Some cabinetry is constructed of inexpensive, builder-grade materials and may carry with it a much shorter lifespan than other high-end cabinetry. Cabinetry, for any room in your house, but particularly kitchens and bathrooms, can be one of the biggest investments you will make in your home.  When it comes to purchasing new kitchen cabinets, the range of potential cost is huge depending on if you opt for something like Ikea cabinets or you go completely custom.  Better Homes and Gardens explains just how huge the range can be, “According to Kennedy, most cabinets range from $500 to $1,500 per cabinet box. “Based on an estimated 30 cabinets in an average-size kitchen, you can be looking at a cost of about $15,000-$45,000,” she says.”  When customers are determining whether or not to replace their kitchen cabinets, that expense can be a tough pill to swallow.  But, if the money is in the budget, and your existing cabinets meet certain “replace” criteria, it is best to bite the bullet and make the investment in your home – after all, the kitchen is the heart of the home.

As we mentioned above, there are certain criteria that, when met, make it a far better investment to replace your kitchen cabinets than attempt to refinish or refurbish your existing cabinets in some way.  If you have cabinetry that is constructed largely of pressboard the lifespan tends to be much shorter and as soon as any aging starts to show (sagging, edges or seams coming apart, etc.), it is not really worth the investment to try to refinish or re-face them because they may not last much longer and then you are throwing money out the window.  If the cabinet structure is damaged and repairs are costly, it is probably time to replace them.  In addition to structural problems, there is another reason that it is better to replace them – you want to change the style.  If you are remodeling and your cabinets have an outdated or just different style than you prefer, rather than trying to force them to be something you do not like, it is better to invest the money in your remodel and get the exact look you want.  There are affordable cabinetry options in every style you can imagine so you can get the kitchen of your dreams with any budget.  Cabinets are a statement piece and an investment in your home, when you opt to replace your cabinets you will love the results and actually increase the value of your home.
