Remodel Your Closet To Add More Storage

A few shelves and some hanging rods do not a closet make.  Sure, they get the job done but do they maximize the space?  No.

A few shelves and some hanging rods do not a closet make.  Sure, they get the job done but do they maximize the space?  No.  Whether you have a home where storage space is a hot commodity or you just want to enjoy a well-organized closet where you do not have to constantly dig and shift things to try to find that sweater you want to wear.  You do not have to deal with a constantly messy closet, instead, consider installing a closet organization system that will give your closet new life and allow you to enjoy a breath of fresh air every time you step foot in your closet.  There are a wide variety of closet organization systems for every budget.  From DIY to completely custom, there is a closet to meet your needs and price range.  But, if you do not have the budget for a completely custom closet organizational system installed by a closet company, we recommend that, rather than trying to use your drill for the ou instead opt to have a contractor or handyman help you design, choose or install your closet organization so that you know it is done right, looks great, and will last a long time.

When designing your new closet, take this time of remodeling to really think about what you would enjoy for organization.  Do you prefer to have more drawer space for folded items?  Are you lacking in tall hanging space for long dresses and coats?  Could you use more shelving?  Or, perhaps a surface space to organize your jewelry or other accessories?  All of these things should be factored into your design.  Additionally, depending on your budget, you may want to consider the materials you choose carefully.  For instance, by opting for cedar wood in your closet organization it not only provides timeless elegance but also help repel cloth eating insects like moths.  Other materials like cherry, oak or pine make for beautiful closets as well.  To truly get a picture of what your specific needs are, take everything out of your closet, donate or sell any items you no longer want and take an inventory of what you want to store in your closet.  This will help give you a much more clear picture so that you can choose specific closet features accordingly.  Next, strategize how you can best maximize your space.  One hanging rod is not particularly practical.  Double hanging maximizes the space and if you add shelves above each hanging rod you can place items on the shelves as well.  Do not waste any vertical space.  High spaces that are out of reach may be inconvenient for retrieving everyday items but you can store item that are used less frequently or out of season there.

In addition to having closet organizational items installed, it is a great time to repaint your closet.  While you may think it is not important it will give your closet a completely new and fresh feel.  If your floor is dingy or worn out, it may be a great time to replace your flooring as well.  Because it is a small, secluded area from the rest of your home you can replace flooring in your closet relatively inexpensively.  Additionally, do not forget lighting and electrical.  While these features are not necessary to update or change at all, if you are going for a complete remodel then they may make a big difference.  Recessed lighting is a nice touch and if you want to make your walk-in closet a beautiful room  that is an extension of your home’s decor consider adding a chandelier or sconces as well.  While you probably do not need an electrical outlet in your closet, if you like to leave your phone in there to charge or want to be able to plug something in as needed ask your handyman to add an electrical outlet so that it is done professionally and accurately because the last thing you ever want to DIY without knowledge is electrical work.    Speak to your handyman or contractor today to begin designing and installing your dream closet and enjoy all the added storage, convenience and beauty a remodeled closet provides.
