Repairs / January 15, 2016
Whether your roof is older or a big storm has recently rolled through, you may be wondering if your roof has incurred some damage. Some damage may be so severe that your entire roof may need to be replaced but in other cases your shingle roof may simply need some repairs. By finding and making repairs to your shingle roof in a timely manner you can extend the life of your roof and put off the costly and frustrating experience of having to purchase a new roof for your home.
There are some common signs to watch for with your shingle roof that may help indicate whether a repair or replacement may be needed. If you notice these common warning signs it is best to call a handyman, contractor or roofer to take a look sooner rather than later so that further damage to your home can be avoided. First, a shingle roof will typically last anywhere from 20 – 25 years. If your roof is getting old it is imperative that you keep a close eye on things and make speedy repairs if problems are noticed because you will likely need a new roofer sooner rather than later and because the age of the shingles may make them more susceptible to damage. The next thing you will want to watch for are curling or buckling shingles. If your roof shingles are curling or buckling it is a sign of damage, defect or old age. If only a few are doing this you may be able to replace them but if they all are it may be time for repair. Next, if you see a few missing shingles it is wise to immediately address the issue and have them repaired. Leaving them unrepaired leaves your roof exposed to more damage and could result in the need to replace your shingle roof. Additionally, if you see a few shingles that seem to be lacking shingle granules, or notice a lot of shingle granules in the gutter it is wise to have your roof inspected for damage. After inspecting the exterior of the roof it is wise to head into your attic to look for any sunlight coming through the roof. If you can see sunlight it is a sure sign repair or replacement is needed. In any of these cases a simple, relatively inexpensive repair may be possible. The sooner your address potential roof issues, the better because your roof is one of the most important parts of the structure of your home and helps protect your home from major damage on a daily basis. If you have any concerns, call your contractor immediately to have your roof inspected and repairs completed promptly.
