10 Tools Every Homeowner Should Have

When it comes to owning a home, there are bound to be a few repairs that pop up from time to time.  Some of these repairs can simply be handled by the homeowner, while some require professional assistance because of their complexity or because the homeowner is unsure how to complete the task.  Many simple repairs can be handled by the homeowner, as long as the homeowner has the right tools.  Without them, there is little that can be done.  Whether just moving into a new home, or if the need has suddenly arisen, it is wise to assemble a basic set of tools so that when a repair or project arises, you are prepared.  Below is a list of 10 tools that every homeowner should have in their toolbox.

  • Hammer

Every homeowner needs a hammer with a rip claw.  A rubber handled hammer is ideal for comfort and ease of use and the rip claw makes it easy to remove nails.  Whether you need to hang pictures or art on the wall, assemble furniture or many other home products, a hammer is a handy tool to have on hand.

  • Screwdrivers

For screwdrivers, you will actually need two.  It is wise to have both a Philips head screwdriver as well as a flat head screwdriver on hand for whatever needs may arise.  Depending on the screw, you will need different screwdrivers to accomplish your task.  You can either purchase separate screwdrivers or you can buy a screwdriver with an interchangeable head that is an all-in-one screwdriver.

  • Tape Measure

Whether you need to measure how much room you have before purchasing a refrigerator, deciding how much space you need between art on the walls, or measuring how much room you have to fit that new perfect sofa you have your eyes on.  A tape measure is an indispensible tool.

  • Level

Is there anything worse than hammering nails into the wall, hanging something and then realizing it is crooked.  Even a small, inexpensive level will improve your work but a three-foot level will be the most versatile for various tasks.

  • Adjustable Wrench

There are nuts and bolts in home repair, plumbing and assembly.  In order to adjust those nuts and bolts, you will need at least one adjustable wrench but a few different sizes of adjustable wrenches will offer the most options when doing home projects.

  • Locking Pliers

Pliers are important for getting a tight grip on anything and giving you the leverage you need.  Additionally, locking pliers can be used to hold things in place.

  • Utility Knife

While you may not use a utility knife every day, you will be thankful you have it when you need it.  A utility knife can be used for slicing through things like cardboard, wallpaper, carpet, wire, rope and more.

  • Cordless Drill

From assembling furniture, to attaching hardware, to hanging things, a drill is an important tool that comes in very handy for many jobs.  Along with your drill, you will also want a basic set of drivers and bits so that you have whatever you need.

  • Flashlight or Headlamp

Nothing is worse than needing to do a repair and not having enough light to do it.  Whether the power is out, you have to do work under a sink, or you do not have adequate lighting where you are working, a flashlight or headlamp will save the day during repairs in the dark.

  • Saw

A saw is another tool you may not use often, but is irreplaceable when you do need it.   Cutting wood for a project or cutting branches down is a much easier task with a saw.
