Kitchen Remodelers – September 16, 2022 – Decorators agree that if it is at all possible a kitchen should have a center island. The installation of an island brings with it so many advantages that it becomes almost essential to remodel around the island. Not only does the center island provide additional storage potential, but it also presents the ideal opportunity for a central gathering point for friends and family. The island can take many forms, from the smaller unit that can be fitted with wheels that are lockable to the more substantial unit that could house the hob and possibly a stove. The island serves as a focal point and, when planed properly can create an extremely efficient kitchen lay out.
Finding space for your island
In larger kitchens the island can be crowned with an overhead storage facility which may also incorporate an extraction system. Apart from the additional storage the island offers the opportunity for extra seating or perhaps the area for the children to have their breakfast or guest to enjoy a glass of wine while admiring the culinary skills of the chef. Islands can also serve as a natural separation of the cooking area from the living area. The size of the island depends on the available space, but great care should be taken in assessing just how much space is available. It is all too easy to forget about the area that open cupboard doors or drawers take up. Remember too that the refrigerator door takes up a fair amount of space when open and likewise the oven door. Make sure that you have allocated adequate space to allow for easy access when these doors are open.
Decide on the use of the island
A great addition to the kitchen island is a power supply. While this would preclude islands that are mobile, the larger fixed islands are a convenient space to house electrical appliances like coffee machines or food processors. Consideration needs to be given to the intended purpose of the island. Will it be used for food preparation and cooking or will it be a station for baking or a serving area for casual dining? This would largely determine the type of work top that would be appropriate. If it is going to be utilized as a cooking area then the fitting of a worktop that can withstand high temperatures would be the correct choice but if it intended to be more of a food preparation area without cooking then a top more in line with easy cleaning and antibacterial qualities would be more apt. Another feature to consider is that of lighting. If the island is going to incorporate overhead storage and an extraction unit then it would be wise to fit down lighting to the unit. Fortunately, many of the modern extraction units incorporate lighting in their features but this does mean that you will have to provide a power source to the overhead storage area.
Become the focal point of your kitchen
As a food preparation area, it may well be a consideration to install a prep bowl into the island, but one must consider the additional plumbing required and naturally this compels the island to be stationary. Regardless of the intended use of the island the social consequences of its addition are substantial. It allows the cook to be part of the social activity around the kitchen. The time spent preparing and cooking food is no longer the solitary drudge but is transformed into family fun time or an opportunity to interact with friend while the meal is being prepared.
