Five Questions to Help You Avoid Common Kitchen Remodeling Mistakes

PasadenaFlooring

When it comes to kitchen remodeling, it’s always best to get things right the first time. Making changes to your space can take some serious cash, and there are some mistakes that just may be too expensive to make. That’s what this list is for: to help make sure that you’ve considered everything before you jump into renovations. Overlooking the smallest of details can cause a ripple effect and leave you with a larger bill (or a confusing kitchen aesthetic!). So, here are five questions to ask yourself before you even begin the demo phase.

  1. Are my cabinets salvageable?

First and foremost, you will want to take a look at the things you believe are salvageable about your kitchen. Often times, people think they need to order all new cabinets if they want to match their new aesthetic. More often than not, however, cabinets can be updated, re-stained, painted, etc. and they will look as good, or better, than the new ones from the store. In order to avoid unnecessary costs, reface or paint your old kitchen cabinets in order to help them mesh with a new color scheme. Typically, you could save yourself thousands of dollars by utilizing handyman services and ditching the expensive cabinets which are bound to have far less character.

2. Will my kitchen still be functional after new adjustments?

Sometimes, when getting excited about new ideas for our kitchens, we can forget about one of the most important features of the room: functionality. And when renovating, while the kitchen is outside of its functional state, it’s easy to lose track of what works best where. Consider taking photos of the old setup before tearing it all away, it just might come in handy when you can’t remember exactly how the fridge fits the space. If you’re planning on rearranging entirely, try getting a tape measure out when the appliances are in their old position, and see how far apart they are from each other; also, see how much standing room you need so as to not be bumping into things when cooking.

3. Will my accent pieces match once they’re all in the same place?

It can be difficult to imagine what all of your pieces will look like once they’re all together in the place they’re meant to be. Try staging your accents in another room (with the same wall color if possible) and see how they look together. This will make decorating far easier in the long run and get you that much closer to the finished product.

4. How can I make my space easier to clean?

As you know, the kitchen can be the messiest part of the house if you let it. That’s why investing in tile backsplashes and, possibly, granite for countertops is a great idea. Both tile and granite make it a whole lot easier to wipe up after spills and get a squeaky-clean finish. Also, granite countertops allow you to set hot plates and things on them, and they have no risk of being damaged. Tiles will protect the sheet rock behind them and save your walls from getting moldy due to the kitchen messes which are bound to happen.

5. Do I need the help of a professional?

Many of the more pressing mistakes one might make when remodeling a kitchen can be avoided with the help of a professional.
