Bathroom Remodeling – 4 Things to Remember

Bathroom Remodeling can be a lot of work, but beautiful bathrooms really are special, so it is almost always worth the blood, sweat, and tears you put in! While searching for bathroom remodeling ideas, you may feel overwhelmed by all of the choices. There are lots of important do’s and don’ts to remember during the remodel and some things slip through the cracks easier than others.

Below are four of the most crucial considerations you need to make when planning a bathroom remodel.

Choose the Type of Bathroom Wisely

Every bathroom is unique, as they come in a variety of layouts. Here are the layouts you’re most likely to choose from:

  • Standard bathroom- a standard bathroom contains a sink, a toilet, and a bath, a shower, or a combination of both.
  • Master en-suites- Master en-suites have the same features as a standard bathroom but are accessed through the master bedroom. Master en-suites are more likely to have more luxurious elements such as a soaking tub, or a separate steam shower.
  • Wet bath- Wet baths are a type of full bathroom in which the shower steals the show. The shower isn’t in a separate space, cornered off, or behind a curtain or glass door. Rather wet baths are completely waterproofed from ceiling to floor.

Consider Your Lighting Choices

Believe it or not, lighting is something that a lot of people forget about when designing a new bathroom. Unfortunately, bad bathroom lighting is obvious and will ruin the luxurious look you were going for.

There are two types of lighting you need to consider- natural and artificial.

  • Natural lighting-allows the face to feel brighter and lighter. Natural lighting schemes around mirrors are always a good choice because they allow you to more accurately see what you’ll look like once you step outside of your house.
  • Artificial lighting- is necessary, because once the sun goes down you’ll be in trouble without it! Artificial lighting in the shower area and above the tub is always a great idea for safety’s sake.

Bathrooms are sometimes filled with mirrors. And while this is great for checking out your outfit and doing your makeup, it can also complicate how light bounces around. Therefore bathroom lighting often requires a professional.

Ventilation

If your bathroom has a shower or a bathtub (no matter how big or small), the building code requires ventilation. Ventilation usually comes in the form of windows, window vents, and exhaust fans.

For obvious reasons, bathrooms are naturally prone to dampness. Which means they need good ventilation to keep mold from growing. And don’t just rely on windows for ventilation, because we promise you’ll regret that decision in the winter (or if any critters decide to pop their head through the window).

Think About Aging in Place Now

No matter your age, it never hurts to plan ahead. So while you’re planning your bathroom remodel, consider making it accessible for yourself to use in 10-20 years. Although it may seem a little wild to plan that far ahead, it will save you plenty of money in the long run. A few ways of doing this might be:

  • adding blocking behind drywall to support grab rails later on.
  • Choosing a walk-in shower.
  • Putting your toilet at a more comfortable height.
  • Considering a glass shower door instead of a shower curtain.
