A faucet that drips isn’t just annoying; it also wastes valuable water and can have a negative impact on your home’s overall water consumption. It’s important to address these leaks as soon as possible before they become a more problematic concern.
In this post, Handyman Connection® of Novi discusses how to properly fix a leaky faucet.
Start by determining where the leak is actually coming from. Leaks that come from the spout require different repair work than a leak coming from the base. For the tools, you’ll need an allen wrench, a screwdriver and large, split-joint pliers.
Finally, turn off the water supply to that specific faucet. You wouldn’t want a jet of water to make a mess while you’re doing repair work, after all.
Disassembling the Faucet
Taking the faucet apart is actually pretty straightforward. What’s important to remember is the order you took each piece apart. If it’s your first time, we suggest recording yourself disassembling the faucet so you can put it back together easily.
Replace the Problematic Part
Leaks that form around the base of the spout have a problem originating from the O-ring. If the ring is loose, then all you need to do is tighten it with your tools. If the leak is coming from the spout, then you need to replace the washer or a corroded valve seat. The same applies to a damaged O-ring, though.
It’s easy to find the replacement parts for your faucet. Take note of the brand, which you’ll find stamped on the faucet. Alternatively, you can bring the parts to the store and have them identify the brand if the stamp is too faded to read.
Once you’re done, all you need to do is put the parts back together. We recommend cleaning each part to reduce leaks and other problems from happening.
